CoQ10: Most Powerful Antioxidant for a Healthy Heart

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may be the best antioxidant there is for optimum heart health. It is produced within the body and is necessary for the basic functioning of cells. CoQ10 levels are indirectly proportional with age. So, as our age increases and we acquire chronic and debilitating diseases, our CoQ10 levels decrease. CoQ10 levels start to drop when a person reaches 30 years old. This makes them more vulnerable to free radical damage. Some drugs also lower our CoQ10 levels in the body. With lack of CoQ10, the body’s most important source of energy is depleted. It is most concentrated in the heart and liver. But how does an antioxidant work to keep the heart healthy?

When oxygen interacts with certain molecules in the body, a group of atoms with unpaired electrons are produced. These are called free radicals. You might have heard of this term already. Free radicals are destructive chemicals that attack the body systems and make their functioning less effective. Antioxidants work to break the production of free radicals in the body, thereby protecting the cells from being destroyed.

CoQ10 is a very powerful antioxidant. For a healthy heart, LDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) levels need to be kept high. It has been proven that oxidation of LDL cholesterol promotes atherosclerosis and Coronary Heart Disease. Since CoQ10 is a more poweful antioxidant compared to Vitamin E, then it is more effective in preventing LDL oxidation. Vitamin E can become a pro-oxidant if it becomes exhausted. On the other hand, CoQ10 can regenerate Vitamin E and restore its antioxidant properties.

CoQ10 has been widely established as one of the top cardioprotective nutrients. It is necessary in generating cellular energy for muscles, including the heart muscle. It is also widely recommended to repair heart damage and assist the heart towards its optimum level of functioning and to prevent heart attacks and valve damage. For people taking maintenance medications like beta blockers, CoQ10 reduces the side effects of these prescription drugs. It also assists in recovery from different heart diseases like Angina Pectoris, Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Moreover, it is very effective in reducing blood pressure and blood lipids.

The minimum recommended daily allowance of CoQ10 is 30mg. If you want to derive this amount from dietary intake, you’ll need to consume two-and-a-half pounds of peanuts or one pound of sardines. When taken at 100mg a day, CoQ10 exerts an effective cardioprotective role. Although it is readily available in oily fish, fruits, and vegetables, it is difficult to achieve the right level of CoQ10 with food as the sole source. Studies show that the average intake of CoQ10 from dietary sources is only about 3-5mg. This is obviously not enough to increase the CoQ10 levels in tissues and blood. That’s why taking of CoQ10 supplements are widely encouraged nowadays.

CoQ10 supplements are very safe to use and have exhibited no toxic side effects. However, those with serious medical conditions should consult first with their doctors before taking it as it has to be taken in high doses to provide medicinal benefit. By doing this, you are assured that you are getting the right amount of CoQ10 to keep your heart healthy and free from destructive free radicals.
